Back Slipsteam!

Photo from http://www.slipstreamsports.com/team.html Visit here and buy stuff!
Did the Tour de France leave you numb and lack-luster? Do you feel like there is no trust in pro sports? Is the apocolypse right around the corner? Are you still trying to pull the knives out of your back from Vino, Rasmussen and Mayo?
Alright then, here is the solution. Team Slipsteam! These guys are the most anti-drug/dope team out there and they are becoming wildly popular. They just signed David Millar, Christian Vande Velde and David Zabriske. If it is commercially profitable to have teams that are aggressively dope free than there is a chance for the peloton to be drug free. You can help by buying merchandise from teams like Slipsteam.
Go Team Slipstream!

Levi Wins Battle, Contador Wins the War

Photo ©: Cyclingnews.com
Levi put together one of the best TT's in Tour history, but just fell short of winning the whole enchilada. Contador survived the hard driving Evans as well. The Kid will carry the white and yellow jersey to Paris. Levi said that he will not pull a "Vinokourov" tomorrow, so it should be a celebration in Paris for the Disco 1-3. I haven't worked up the Pool results, it's been a long day of installing my bamboo floors! John and I got some show points for Leipheimer, the rest didn't score. More tomorrow...

Casar Hits Dog, then Wins Stage

Photo ©: AFP Photo

Photo ©: AFP Photo
Sandy Casar wins after a hard crash with a dog. The French get their win, and the Tour rolls into tomorrows decisive TT. John scored on Sandy to show, and I picked Axel Merckx for second place!
Pool Order:
1. Gerald-83
2. Adam-36
3. John-34
4. Tony-20
5. Karen-10
6. Rooster-9
The race will be between John and Gerald. If Evans wins and Leipheimer is 3rd, John stands to gain 80 points. There are show points for GC, and Gerald should get 30 points there which would put them in a virtual dead heat, but John has Evans winning the TT, and for him to win that would probably have to happen. So, if Evans wins John wins, if he doesn't then it's Gerald!

Contador Rides 17 in White, then Dons Yellow

photo: AFP
Bennati wins the stage today, but we are consumed with rAss, Vino and the like. Some of the rider reaction has been great, check this out...
The following is taken from cyclingnews.com

Pineau and Hinault critical of fellow riders

After years of silence riders who dope are being frowned upon by their colleagues, with Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Telecom)and Sebastian Hinault (Crédit Agricole) joining the growing list of riders to speak out. Pineau aimed his comments at Cristian Moreni. "There are a lot of riders in his team whose contracts will expire at the end of the season," he stated to HLN.be. "Thanks to him they may also be living on the street. If a rider like him was in my team, I wouldn't hesitate to punch him in the face."

Hinault is also furious with the state of affairs, which is reminiscent of '98 when the Festina team were thrown off the Tour after doping products were found in a team car. "We are not scared to talk about Rasmussen, only your grandmother would believe that you missed four doping controls by accident," he said to HLN.be of the Dane's excuse for not filing his whereabouts to anti-doping authorities. "He is lucky that he has the law on his side and we can't kick him out of the sport. It's a real shame."

Here is our GC as of now:

1 Alberto Contador Velasco (Spa) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 76.18.25
2 Cadel Evans (Aus) Predictor - Lotto 1.53
3 Levi Leipheimer (USA) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 2.49
4 Carlos Sastre Candil (Spa) Team CSC 6.02
5 Haimar Zubeldia Agirre (Spa) Euskaltel - Euskadi 6.29
6 Alejandro Valverde Belmonte (Spa) Caisse d'Epargne 10.18
7 Kim Kirchen (Lux) T-Mobile Team 11.36
8 Yaroslav Popovych (Ukr) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 12.50
9 Mauricio Soler (Col) Barloworld 13.31

Great Dane Breaks Disco Challenge

photo: AFP
Rasmussen outlasted an early break by Sastre and Mayo, and left Evans reeling midway through the final climb of the day. Then the Disco boys made their valiant efforts to no avail as the Dane simply walked away in the last kilometer. Barring a doping DQ, Rasmussen has just launched himself into cycling history and transformed himself from Polka-King to the Great Dane. He has been denying the accusations against him and I hope he is clean. Today he had this response to the drug questions, "Now I understand what Lance Armstrong went through in seven years. My respect for him is growing day by day. The only good thing about the Vino' situation is that it proves that the system is working. To that I can only add that I have 14 negative tests at this Tour." Let's hope he has 14 more negative tests!
On Pool news, Gerald picked the Great Dane for the win, John and Tony had show points. Gerald is on a long breakaway at the moment, but his final GC is full of Astana...

Contador vs. Rasmussen!

photo: AFP
Stage 15 saw our battle between Contador and Rasmussen continue. Wednesday's Pyrenean Monster culminating at the peak of Col d'Aubisque, in my opinion, will be the decisive stage of our 2007 Tour de France! Evans, Leipheimer, and Kloden are technically hanging on by their potential time gains in the final TT, but at 4:00, 5:25 and 5:34 respectively coming into a stage that will likely see them loose another minute or two to the climbers, the TT trio are battling for 3rd place. How sweet would it be to have a Disco 1, 3 though! Contador sits at 2:34 to Rass, and Rass lost :37 to Contador in the first TT. The young Disco-gun will be packing the heat, and the slight Dane will be reaching for a fresh pair of Sidi's!

photo: AFP
After Vino's rest day, he took the not too interested contenders by storm and notched another stage win for Astana. In pool news Gerald continues to crush the field with a Vino pick! John and I continue our dual, I pulled ahead again on Vino to show.

Today's stage was mindblowing, I don't even know where to start. Vino - gone (for good). Evans, Levi, Kloden and Sastre rode tough and still have a fighting chance. Rasmussen and Contador are our favorites! Who would have thought that two weeks ago! It's a tough Tour to predict, Tony was the only one to score on a Rass pick.

rAssmussen?!!

Photo-Bettini

I can't help but blog a bit on Rasmussen. Up until a few days ago, I was a big Rass fan. I had never read an interview, never talked to anyone who knew him, never dug too deep into his character. I was just incredibly impressed with his stage wins over the last two TdF's and was equally impressed with his stage 8 win. I identify with Rass because I am better at climbing than the other cycling disiplines, and am very thin like him. I get the same jokes that he gets about being so skinny. (Friends, I like being thin, and if you've made jokes of me in the past, like I fall like a feather, now see the hand motion...I think they are funny, sometimes really funny, so keep them coming.) Michael and I even share some of the same prowess in bike handling. More jokes! This time they're not funny! Just kidding, I deserve those too...sniff..sniff...cry...someday I'll learn how to ride my bike around corners!

Wow, sorry for such a long intro, but I am just really upset about getting to know Rasmussen over the last couple of days that he has been vaulted into the public eye. It is true that statements can be taken out of context, people can be poor at conveying their true feeling, and the press loves to bring people down from the highest places, but it is also true that you can't hide yourself completely and bits of the true you come out whether you like it or not. Michaels first moment in the highlight quoted him with saying "you can trust me" in response to a drugs in cycling question. I took it as a nice straight, honest answer and was glad to hear him say it. Then I had a conversation with someone who knows a guy that rode with Rass back in the day, and there were negative comments about character. Then the comment about Menchov not being able to get his ass over the Galibier, and it was certain who the leader of Rabobank was now. Then, as a photographer, I noticed that just about every photo published of Rass lately has been unflattering. If you are an editor, or a photographer to the pro peloton you get to know the people you deal with on a daily basis, and you tend to portray your subjects in the manner that you see them. This is out of truth to your vision and an effort to portray things journalistically correct. Photos say much more than "this is a guy on a bike", or "this is a guy on the podium". Emotion, angle, lighting, and moment all define the way the viewer is going to perceive the image. Photographers and editors have spoken load and clear that Rass is a bad apple without saying a tangible word about it. Then the Danish national team dumped Rass over not being available for drug testing. Now, today a friend from Michael's past comes out with the surprise, it's blood, not Sidi's trick that Rass pulled on him in 2002. There are a lot of people out there selling interviews and books, and this smelled like one of those on the surface, but I read the whole article and it really seems legit. We will never know, because people lie so much about these things it's impossible to know in the end, but this guy's explanation just resonates rational and truthful.

As I try to make sense of this battle between dopers and testers, I'm stuck with the bottom line that most of us are really uncomfortible with: there is too much motivation for people to cheat at sports, it is impossible to have a clean race, but of course we have obligations to fight the good fight because it is just simply wrong not to.

Some more soul searching brings this: we were not meant to be a global society, really we as human beings work better in small groups. Extreme fame and fortune bring motivation to be dishonest, which is always hurtful in the end. What it comes down to is we are supposed to sing, dance and compete ourselves, not watch and fund through commerce the best ones in the world. We are meant to sing our own songs, with our own voices and race with our own legs on Tuesdays and Thursday nights with our friends then drink a few beers after. This is the meaning of life folks, please, no thanks or pats on the back, just make your checks payable to:.....

On another note: the picture above is a glamour shot of Rass on a TT bike! Now if that isn't funny, I don't know what it is!

Boonen Sprints to Win

photo: AFP
Gerald increased his lead today with 2 show points for the classic Eric Zabel. It looked like the group was resting today for the next four decisive stages: 13 TT, 14 Mountain, 15 Mountain, 16 Mountain! Here is an interesting statistic from last years Tour compiled by a guy named John Hay Jr., a Cycling News reader. (stolen from their site!) Thanks Cycling New, you guys rock!

John wrote:

I did a bit of checking on how the current contenders fared in last year's two Individual Time Trials. Last year's ITT's were 52 km and 54 km rides. Combining the results (and, trust me, there may be error in my adding and subtracting hours and minutes, but it's relatively close), here's some of our current contenders' combined 2006 TdF ITT times, starting with the fastest and showing the deficits from there.

Each 2007 contender's current place in the GC is in ( ):

(2) Andreas Kloden, 2h 11'52"
(13) Oscar Pereiro, 2h14'48" - 2'56" behind Kloden's time
(4) Cadel Evans, 2h14'58" - 3'06"
(18) Denis Menchov, 2h15'44" -3'52"
(6) Carlos Sastre, 2h16'11" -4'19"
(14) Christophe Moreau, 2h17'01" -6'19"
(9) Levi Leipheimer, 2h21'35" -9'43"
(10) Mikel Aztarloza, 2h21'52" -10'00"
(1) Michael Rasmussen, 2h24'48" -12'56"

Hunter Wins Dodgy Sprint

photo: AFP
Astana smelled pay-back with at least one of the contenders today. When Christophe Moreau seemed to be laboring at the back of the group after a crash, Astana seized on the opportunity to attack, and the hard driving Khasaks put over 3 minutes into the bloody Frenchman. Most of the top sprinters, save Boonen, were caught back in Moreau's group, so the sprint seemed to be anyone's game. Then, inside a K, Boonen got caught in a tangle, which left the sprint wide open for the opportunist - Hunter. A hard driving Cancellara almost made it 3! John was the only one to score on show points for Hunter.

Post Alpine Cheers and Jeers

photo: Graham Watson
Cheers to Valverde for showing his metal today. It was a put-up or shut-up kind of day and our contenders list has shrunk to this: Rasmussen, Valverde, Mayo, Evans, Contador, Moreau, Sastre, Kloden and Leipheimer.

photo: AFP
Cheers to those that raced valiantly but lost too much time to be serious contenders: Schleck, Menchov and Vino. Michael Rogers crashed out in stage 8 in virtual yellow, that has got to be a really hard way to go. Vino was brought to tears at the end of stage 9 today, and your heart has to go out to him. The guys got about six square feet of road rash and still he continues on. I hope to see him on the attack in the coming days.

photo: AFP
Jeers to Rasmussen for blowing a chance to motivate his team-mates behind him. After stage 9 he commented, "Now there is no doubt about who is the captain of this team is. I stayed close to Valverde because he had another teammate up there. I felt like it was a victory for me to be able to fight back the 25 times Valverde tried to attack. I felt very clear in the head today seeing the tactics of the race. It was disappointing that Menchov couldn't get his ass over the Galibier. I think it's a climber's Tour." Wow! Michael sure knows how to put the ass in R-Ass-Mussen...Let's see if he can finish Saturday's TT without crashing (twice)!
And finally Cheers to Contador for trading elbows with the big boys. Cheers for Mayo's return, and Leipheimer's stealth. Levi is capable of punishing the "climbers" on the TT's. Let's wait and see. Go Levi! On the exit of the Alps Cadel Evans was looking very good, and he won't suffer on the TT either. Sastre and Kloden are looking as smooth as ever and you know they will be there in the end.

Soler Solo!

Rooster was the only one to score today, and it was on Valverde's 2nd place.
What a stage today! Yowza! Vino and Menchov are done. These are our contenders:
1 Michael Rasmussen (Den) Rabobank 43.52.48
2 Alejandro Valverde Belmonte (Spa) Caisse d'Epargne 2.35
3 Iban Mayo Diez (Spa) Saunier Duval - Prodir 2.39
4 Cadel Evans (Aus) Predictor - Lotto 2.41
5 Alberto Contador Velasco (Spa) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 3.08
6 Christophe Moreau (Fra) AG2r Prévoyance 3.18
7 Carlos Sastre Candil (Spa) Team CSC 3.39
8 Andreas Klöden (Ger) Astana 3.50
9 Levi Leipheimer (USA) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 3.53
All of these guys are looking really good and have their own strengths to pull on, and weaknesses to limit. The TT Saturday will reshuffle our order surely. For me, I love the climbers, I'm pulling for Rass, Mayo and Contador to limit their losses!

Rassmussen Takes Solo Win

Rassmussen took the epic mountain stage 8 in classic Rassmussen style. The Rabobank Dane bolted in the middle of the stage on the steepest pass of the day, and never looked back. You got to love a guy that can win solo on the most difficult days of the entire Tour! Nice job! I'd love to see him surprise with a decent TT. I won't hold my breath though...
Not much scoring today, Tony and John got points for show on Mayo and Rass.
1. Gerald-57
2. Adam-26
3. John-23
4. Tony-12
5. Karen-10
6. Rooster-4
On a side note: What was up with Valverde/Evans/Mayo? They get the lame contender award for their lack of courage today. The killer break was chase 1, which included Moreau, Valverde, Evans, Mayo, Contador, Schleck and Kashechkin. The later three are working for someone else right now so they can be forgiven for not helping the break. Christophe Moreau was working his a$$ off, and trying to get the group organized, but no one would have any of it. All Valverde wanted to do was stick as close as possible to Moreau's wheel, then he weaseled by him at the end for 3rd overall. Moreau, Evans and Mayo could have had another minute on the Vino group if they had just traded pulls, too bad, their loss. Kloden looked very strong and I can't believe he's still working for Vino. 'Til Monday!

Adam Nails it with Pozzato

I picked Pozzato today, I can't believe he won! It was a wild ride with a lot of crashes to contending riders.
photo: AFP

Vino lost over a minute today and is at 2:10 after today. That's not crazy time normally, but considering his team-mate Andreas Kloden is in 2nd place right now, and happens to have a 2nd and 3rd place GC under his belt in the last two years...Vino has got to know he's in danger of becoming the German's lackey. My prediction is that Vino will be on the attack sometime over the next couple of days, and we are going to see a dual for the leadership of Astana!

It was a hard day to pick, but Tony managed to nail Boonen for second. Gerald is enjoying a long breakaway, but Tony has moved his Sobe squad to the front and has begun chase. Robbie Crashes, then Burns...Gerald Keeps Lead

"I crashed with about 20 kilometres to go and landed on my knee and wrist," explained a still incredulous McEwen post-stage, "but my teammates waited for me. It was very hard to get back to the peloton and I was thinking 'it's finished' because when you crash and hurt yourself it's not good, but I stayed concentrated. I found the energy through the fear and frustration because I had crashed on the first stage of the Tour, but I realized I had nothing to lose. My goal at the Tour was to win one stage and I've done that, but I hope my injuries aren't too bad tomorrow." - Robbie McEwen. Photo ©: AFP Photo

Waiting for Petacchi, and Others

Hey TdF Poolers, I am still tracking down all the team rosters, and we are waiting for the Petacchi decision. I think he will be in because his hearing is over an asthma inhaler drug. Check back tomorrow for more info. I think I'll just post what I have then. I have most of the major teams, I'm still looking for teams like: Bouygues Telecom!
